Mary Helen (Powers) Pelletier, age 85 of Sand Lake, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ while surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 after a short battle with metastatic lung cancer. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, in May of 1934 to the late Jack and Helen (Moffat) Powers. Mary met the love of her life, Joseph “Roger” Pelletier while attending Mackenzie High School in Detroit, Michigan. Both graduated from Mackenzie in 1952. Mary and Roger married in Dearborn, Michigan in May of 1957 and had two children, Lisa and Michael. They were married almost 18 years before Roger passed away in April of 1975 after his own short battle with lung cancer.

Mary lived most of her life in the Detroit metropolitan area and was a long-time member of St. Gerald’s Catholic Church in Farmington, Michigan, where she was active in the Woman’s Guild. For a number of years she co-owned and operated a small business in Romulus that produced wooden shipping crates and pallets and flooring panels for the heavy truck industry. She was very active in the Michigan Military Moms, providing support and encouragement to Moms and families of military personnel who served or were serving their nation. After moving to Sand Lake several years ago, she regularly attended St. John Paul II Catholic Church in Cedar Springs. During her life she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, joyfully celebrating time spent with her family.

Surviving family members are her children, Lisa (Wayne) Pelletier Foster and Michael (Michele) Pelletier; grandchildren, Jason (Krystal) Foster, Brittany (Andrew) Foster Karll and Marissa Pelletier; and great-granddaughter, Hayleigh Foster. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger; her parents, Jack and Helen (Moffatt) Powers and her sister Jacqueline Powers.

Gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday, December 27, 2019, at St. John Paul II Catholic Church, 3110 17 Mile Rd. NE, Cedar Springs, MI 49319, from 2:30 PM until the time of the Memorial Mass at 3:00 PM, with Fr. Lam Le officiating. Prayers of Committal prior to the burial of Mary’s cremated remains will be in the West Chapel at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

I love you, Mom. Thank you for being there for me and for you and Dad raising me to be the man you did. Until we see each other again….

“and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

Dear family, I can’t tell you how very saddened I am to hear of Mary passing. This must have happened shortly after she and I talked. Mary, Roger and I were friends since H.S. and she and I were often mistaken because of our resemblance to one another. I shall miss our very lo…ng talks and will try to attend the prayers of committal at Holy Sepulchre on Saturday the 28th. I shall miss my friend!!
My deepest sympathy to you and all she loved.

    Dear Lisa & Michael,

I considered your mom my best friend. My deepest sympathy to you and your families. I have such fond memories of your mom. My favorite memory was going to Mackinaw Island for high school graduation with her. Your mom was a talker and I loved listening to her stories. I will always remember her and out adventures. She will always have a special place in my heart.

    Love,
    Geraldine (Novel) Garrett
