Joan M. Deering, age 83, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Spectrum Health-Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids. The daughter of Earl & Madaline Jane (VanderWerf) Zahm, she was born in Grand Rapids.
Joan worked for several years in customer service for Meijer before making the transition to cleaning a few local banks part-time until she was ready to fully retire. She enjoyed bowling, thrifting, playing bingo, all things white tiger, sparkly, or on clearance, bump and runs with Ginger and Sharon, and spending time with her kids, grandkids and other family any chance she had.
She was a member of Jesus Non-Denominational Church, and previously was an active part of the VFW and American Legion Ladies Auxiliaries where we all heard the stories of how many memories with family and friends alike. For the last several years, she made her home at Friendship House where she was blessed with many friends and neighbors, right up till the last day checked on her and helped care for her in any way they could.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Scott A. VerHey; and grandson, Matthew John.
Surviving are her sister, Barbara & Les Calkins of Greenville; her four children, Brenda & Mark Lawson of Newaygo, Kelly Jo & Michael Hoven of Gowen, Jeff Latreille of Gowen, and Wendy & Carl Barringer of White Cloud; seven grandchildren John Matthew, Scott & Shanda VerHey, Brandy & Bruce Duncan, Billie Jean Headley, Michael Lawson, Al Headley, Carl & Kim Barringer, and Christopher Barringer; twelve great-grandchildren, Mariah, Isabelle, Gabrielle, Olivia, Adrian, Nicholas, Mya, Averee, Finlee, Koda, Isaac, and Ethan; and several nieces, nephews, and other close family and friends.
Visitation is from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Jesus Non-Denominational Church, 9206 Peck Road, Greenville, where memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Tommy Turner, Jr., Pastor of Jesus Non-Denominational Church, officiating.

Grandma Joan was so special. We loved her and will miss her. Audrey said she is going to miss grandma Joan’s laugh the most and witty humor.
