Donald Thomas Lewis Sr., age 87, of Holland, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family on Saturday, January 30, 2021. He was born March 30, 1933, in Pineville, Kentucky, to the late Fred and Lilly (McDonald) Lewis. Don proudly served his county in the United States Army and retired from the Michigan Air National Guard. He married Mary Alice White on July 21, 1958, in Tampa, Florida. Together they raised six children and celebrated 62 years of marriage.

While we could write an entire novel on his experiences and how he impacted those that were blessed to know him, you would never forget if you encountered him. Maybe he served beside you in the Army or Guard, perhaps he showed you a magic trick while you were shopping, shared a story or made you laugh… He was a dreamer that lived his dream of sailing across the Atlantic (and back) in a 24-foot homemade sloop. He was creative, helpful, kind and loving. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather that will forever be missed this side of Heaven.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary; 6 children, Vickie Berens, Jennifer (Mitchell) Streur, Donald Jr (Lori) Lewis, Patrick (Leah) Lewis, Kyle (Tammy) Lewis, and Christopher (Erin) Lewis; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; sister, Marian (Alan) Cowell; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mae (Spradling) and Jesse White; siblings, Desta (Lewis) Ament, Mack Lewis, and David Lewis; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Per Don’s wishes cremation has taken place and no formal services were held. The family has planned a celebration of life on Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 3:00-7:00 pm at his home.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Zeeland Community Hospital and Hospice of Holland for the care and compassion they have shown them and Don throughout this difficult time.
