Winifred Louise Groth, age 99, of rural Greenville, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015. The daughter of Raymond & Ada (Thompson) Shippey, she was born on February 22, 1916 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. On July 22, 1946, in Greenup, Kentucky, she married Walter L. Groth who preceded her in death on March 14, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; a sister, Lucretia Farrow; and a great grandson, Rocco Hines. Her only son, Sgt. First Class Wade L. Groth, remains missing in action in Vietnam.
Winifred retired from the former Gibson Refrigerator Company/WCI, where she worked as a secretary. She enjoyed birdwatching and tending to her lawn, and had been active in the National League of POW/MIA Families. in retirement, she and her husband, Walter, enjoyed winters spent at Aqua Isles Park in LaBelle, Florida.
Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy Hugenroth of Greenville & Patrick Hugenroth of Belding, and their children, Deborah Hugenroth, Crista & Scotty Hines, Adam Hugenroth & Grace Pollert, and James Hugenroth & Rachel Eernisse; Joan & Mick Slentz of Greenville, and their children, Michael & Shari Slentz, Rodney & Sandy Slentz, and Brian Slentz & Heather Sullivan; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring her wishes, private services will be held at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with burial following at River Ridge Cemetery in Belding. Instead of flowers, Mrs. Groth would have appreciated contributions in her memory to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, 2600 Virginia Avenue, NW, Suite 104 Washington, DC 20037 – (https://donate.vvmf.org/page/contribute) or to Rocco's Heart (www.roccosheart.org) a hypoplastic left heart syndrome fund established in her great grandson's memory.
