Virginia Louise Smith, age 84, formerly of Greenville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, joining her parents, her son, and the father of her children, Howard Smith, on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Sparrow Carson Hospital in Carson City.  The daughter of Francis Leon & Margaret Lucille (Burgess) Major, she was born on December 10, 1931 in Grand Rapids and was a 1950 graduate of Belding High School.

Virginia also worked outside the home and enjoyed caring for others in her career as a certified nurses assistant at area nursing homes and hospitals.  She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, sang with the Danish Singers, performed puppet shows for area children, and was a gifted pianist and vocalist, having served as church musician at Ashley Baptist Church and at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Luther.  She is remembered by many as a great cook and her family will miss her variety of old-fashioned "comfort food" dinners.

She was preceded in death by her parents;  and her son, Kevin Smith on May 12, 2013.  Surviving are her children, Wendy & Calvin Saur of Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, Gary & Gerd Smith of Greenville, and Tom & Lori Smith of Manistee;  a daughter-in-law, Karen Smith of Stanton;  a brother, Francis Major of Florida;  a sister, Jean Stuart of California;  her grandchildren, Anthony Saur & Dr. Winnie Eng, Carmen Saur & Sean Sales, Cory Smith, Krystina & Joshua Stump, Christian Smith, Robin & Eric Egan, Christopher & Ursula Myrick, Wesley Myrick, Dr. Jordan Smith, and his fiancée,  Dr. Maho Habino, Bryant Smith & Alison Campbell, and Nicholas Smith;  her great-grandchildren, Dexter, Beatrice, Logan, Owen, Elisa, Cameron, Kendall, Ayla, Alice, and Alyssa;  and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, and on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church, 505 S Lafayette Street, Greenville, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.  The Rev. Father Michael F. Cilibraise will preside and Rite of Committal will follow at Ashley Cemetery.
