Verna L. McCarrick, age 86, of Allegan and Holland, entered her eternal home quietly on Monday, September 5, 2016 while in a nursing home in Grand Rapids.
Verna was an amazing artist who excelled as a watercolor, oil and acrylic painter, ceramicist and author. She served as a past president of the Holland Garden Club, winning innumerous awards for her creativity and use of flowers. For many years, she traveled throughout Michigan sharing her talent and skill.
Verna was born in Oak Park, Illinois. After attending Monticello, she married Bill Vandenberg Jr. from Holland. They had two children, Kristy Vandenberg of Kerrville, TX and Charles Vandenberg of Grand Rapids. She married Harley Hill in the 1970’s, and they lived together on Beeline Road in Holland. After his passing, she married Edward McCarrick from Grandville in May 2004 (deceased October 2015). She loved animals, especially her horses and harness racing. One of her greatest passions was fishing in Pentwater and Anna Maria Island, Fl. She incorporated this into her art through porcelain fish, now located in many private art collections.
Verna leaves behind a legacy of art and a life well lived. She is survived by her brother, Harry Sandberg of Grand Rapids; daughter, Kristy; son, Charley (Jorie) and their children, Zachary, Kayley, Layne and Chase Vandenberg; and stepsons, Bill III, Terrance and Thomas Vandenberg.
A private memorial service is pending.
Honoring her wishes, cremation will take place. Arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids.

Verna was a wonderful person who left an imprint on all who knew her. My sympathies go out to Charlie and Kris at this time of her passing.
Sincerely
Tom
I worked for Verna and Harley in her pottery studio for a summer and off and on for a couple of years. Those were some enjoyable times spent with those two in the studio and at art shows. I learned a lot from both of them.
Verna was one of the most talented artists I’d ever known and a compassionate friend.
Verna was a remarkable and talented lady! She she designed and created our first Panther costume for the WO Atletic Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie and Kristin and family.
