Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Thomas Willard Medler, age 61, of Deerton, formerly of Trufant, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 18,2013 from his home. The son of Donald & Virginia (Miller) Medler, he was born on October 17, 1951 in Greenville and graduated from Lakeview High School with the class of 1969.

On October 20, 1973, he married Karol Kay Herzog and they would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Tom worked at Electrolux in Greenville for 28 years before semi-retiring to the Upper Peninsula in 2007. He enjoyed driving bus for Marq-Tran (Marquette transit). His love of outdoors was apparent as he enjoyed softball, riding the “mule”, bonfires, camping in the U.P. and spending as much time as he could with family and friends. He had a contagious smile that could light up any room and had no problem making friends. He will be missed by so many.

Surviving are his wife, Karol Medler of Deerton, their children, Chris & Michelle Medler of Fenwick, and Kelli Medler of Trufant; his mother, Virginia Medler of Trufant; two sisters and a brother, Sandy & Paul Matthews of Greenville, Donald & Janet Medler of Grant, and Debbie & Tery Schuiteman of Newaygo; three grandchildren, Corin, Nolan and Drew; siblings-in-law, Ken & Karen Herzog of Lakeview, and Kathy & Chad Cagle of Clare; a niece and two nephews, Jennifer & Jason Oliver, Donald Medler III, and Wes Farrell; and many other dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation with the family is Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. A time of food and fellowship will follow the ceremony at the Trufant Community Center (former Danish Brotherhood Hall).

Instead of flowers, Tom would have appreciated contributions in his memory to either his grandchildren’s school, Cedar Crest Elementary School in Greenville or Bay Cliff Health Camp, P.O. BOX 310 Big Bay,MI 49808 (www.baycliff.org). To send a message of sympathy to the family, sign Tom’s online guest book, or to share a favorite memory, please visit: www.ChristiansenCares.com

I’d like to thank everyone who came out to support Mom, Kelli, and I. The turn out showed just how many lives that Dad touched. He was a great Dad, not only to Kelli and I, but to many friends of ours. He loved the Spartans and Packers and I’ll never forget going to MSU football and basketball games with him. We got to experience Packers training came together in weather that was well in the 90’s. But, we loved it. He was a coach of mine from T-ball on up to high school. He never missed one of my games. He was there no matter what. He was an avid outdoors man and loved to camp in the U.P. We hunted, fished, skied, and hiked many miles. He loved his Grandchildren so much that it kills me that they won’t get to spend more time with him in this life. But what they will have is endless memories, millions of pictures, and videos to preserve his legacy in our lives. Thank you Dad for all you’ve done for us. Love you and miss you tons. Remember to communicate, appreciate, and validate your loved ones daily. There may not be a tomorrow.

    Hi
I just wanted you to know that I worked with Tom at Frigidaire for many years in Dept. 227. I remember how he always spoke fondly of his kids and wife. He spoke of them with love and pride. Also, how he was a BIG Spartan Fan, even at work. I was very lucky to have known him and call him a friend

Kelli-Karol and Chris- I remember alot of good times with your family when we’d go to Bruce and Arlenes lake lot.I think of the fun and joy he brought to so many with his outrageous Halloween displays. How many times did he have you kids hide behind a tree or lay on the ground so you could jump up and scare the crap out of everyone who came in the yard. Your parents would sit handing out cider, donuts and candy to everyone and laugh like crazy about it. It never scared everyone enough to keep us away,we came back the next year for more!! It was tradition- you had to go to Medlers at Halloween! They were special to people of all ages! It was the “big kid” in him and the belly laughs that we all remember.Oh-and the shorts when it was snowing out!!He was very special and has left family and friends with really significant memories and life lessons.Thinking of you all at this very sad time. Carolyn,Marcus and Taylor

To Tommy’s family. I am so deeply sorry. Tommy was one of the good guys. From sledding at Pike’s,camping and canoeing as adults and watching the grandkids at the easter egg hunt it was all better because of Tom. He got to move to his wonderful U.P. but he will always be a Trufant guy. Love Alice and Jim

Reading these messages sure helped this morning. So great to hear such nice words…and to see all the support is wonderful. When I tell people about my dad..it’s all of your memories combined. I don’t have to tell people a lot for them to see that he was absolutely AMAZING. Him and I were really close and friends could see that. We hold a bond that can’t be broken..even by death on earth..as I know that I have eternity with him..and get to meet my grandpa Medler and so many others. I know he is being a good dad now for my dear friend Jason..Jason is probably giving dad parties and huniting with him!
I will miss you ALWAYS dad..know that we all are taking care of mom and that she will be ok. We have so much support and AWESOME friends. As Corin..Nolan and Drew grow up..I will share all of the great memories..they WILL know their Grandpa and how wonderful our childhood and adulthood were! You were always there for me..through t-ball on up into every sport! I know I had the dad others wanted and you know what….You always treated friends as if they did have you as a dad! I know many will cherish that! I love you more than words can express..but I know you are watching over me..saying..go on now..dry your eyes. LOVE YOU DAD..TO THE MOON AND BACK!!

Although I moved there in middle school, I still consider Trufant the place where I grew up. Tom was one of the dads we looked up to, and tried to keep us Trufant boys in line. I’m truly sorry to hear of his passing, and wish I could be there with you. Thinking of the Medler family from Texas. Tom will be deeply missed.

It is always very difficult to know exactly what to say to those who lose a loved one. It is obvious to see that you had a great father who helped raise such a wonderful woman as you. You have so much outside support of family and friends, which just goes to show what a great family you come from! Wishing you and your family sympathy and strength in this time of grieving.

I did not know Mr. Medler. I know Kelli. And I know that she got at least half of that bubbly, giving, caring, loving character from him. I am humbled by the true goodness that this man must have exhibited in his daily life, and I wish his family and friends peace as they transition from having him to lovingly remembering him and appreciating his contributions to his family and his world.
