Shirley M. Frey, age 88, of Hastings, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Thornapple Manor surrounded by family. Shirley was born on March 16, 1929 to Kenneth & Mildred (Nuding) Wine, in Battle Creek. Shirley’s mother chose her name after Shirley Temple. Shirley and her younger sister Audrey were very close. Shirley married Lloyd Frey in March of 1946; they lived at the 4 corners of Lacey before moving to Long Lake in Delton, where they resided for 47 years.

Shirley worked at Kellogg’s, Riverside Screw, and various restaurants in the Battle Creek area. Shirley and Lloyd started each day at the restaurant in Delton, seeing many friends and customers. She was an avid reader, and loved to knit gifts for others; receiving blankets, baby hats and sweater sets. Her grandchildren always had sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves and dickie collars to tuck in their snow coats. Shirley also quilted, making a quilt for each of her 4 children and 10 grandchildren. Shirley made the best pies and would bring them to the monthly family meal. Shirley will be remembered by her family for the love she shared through the giving of these gifts and time spent together at the lake. Her love for her family will always be remembered.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Suzanne; sister, Audrey Caldwell; and sons-in-law, Tom Loew, and Art Christie. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lloyd Frey; daughters, Sandi Christie, and Marge Loew; sons, Mike (Deb) Frey, and Ken Frey; grandchildren, Jeff Loew, Heidi (Brian) Artz, Heather (Jeff) Kennedy, Jen (Tracy) Frey, Ken (Wendy) Loew, Hope (Robert) Horton, Tori (Pat) Mascho, Shawn (Jody) Frey, Mindy Westra, and Mickey (Marty) Loew; great-grandchildren, Janell Loew, Pat (Gabi) Loew, Padriac Artz, Justin Kennedy, Connor Loew, Dylan Kennedy, Kayla Loew, Lincoln Artz, Ryelee Mascho, Sara Horton, Caleb Frey, Elijah Mascho, Joshua Frey, Lisa Horton, Lily Mascho, Teague Westra, and Madelyn Frey. great-great-grandchildren, Violet & Daniel Loew, Jeremy, Johnny & Jasmine Artz, and Emmett Artz; as well as many nieces, nephews, and daughter-in-law, Deb Frey.

I got to tag along often with my best friend Heidi and her family to many Frey family events. I was blessed to know Sandi’s Mom through those visits. Blessings for the entire Frey clan. Memories keep us together.
