Russell E. Mitchell, age 77, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 after a long illness, at home surrounded by family.

The son of Floyd & Edna (VanVuren) Mitchell, he was born on November 11, 1938 in Grand Rapids. Russell attended South High School and went on to be a proud U.S. Navy Veteran.  Russ retired from Steelcase after 30 years. 

Russ was a member of the American Legion post 208 and the Wyoming Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing cards. 

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary; brother, Loren & Glen. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Kay (Christians) Mitchell; children, Mary (Tom) Bearss, James, and Patricia (Frank) Hernandez; grandchildren, Nicole Mitchell, David & Daniel Hernandez; siblings, James Haack, Carl (Dorothy), Gerald, Marge Schoolland, Marie (Al) Schenk, Delores (George) DeVuyst, Louis VanVuren, Donna Johnson, and Lloyd (Hannah); sister-in-law, Nellie Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews. 

Memorial services are at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Immanuel Reformed Church, 1300 E. Beltline S.E., Grand Rapids, with a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Hospice. 

Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place. Arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids.
