Mr. Richard D. Rhoads, age 80, formerly of Greenville, passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 9, 2009 at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. The son of Daniel & Iva Rhoads, he was born on June 27, 1929 and grew up in the Barryton area.

He served briefly in the United States Army following World War II. Over the years, Richard worked for Reith-Riley in road construction, as a home builder, and at the Gibson Air Conditioning plant in Belding.

On Dec. 10, 1949, in Greenville, he married the former Esther Ruth Dann. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this past Thursday. He enjoyed fishing, the Detroit Tigers, and word searches.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Chambers; a son in law, Raymond Brigham; and his wife, Esther Rhoads on April 24, 2005.

Surviving are his children, Melvin Rhoads & Dani McKinney of Caledonia, Zada Williams & Bill Dhaene of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Louella Brigham of Cadillac, Donna & Bill Anderson of Greenville, and Deborah & John Allen of Ionia; twenty grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren.

Visitation is Sunday from 1-2 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Dennis Johnson, pastor of the Greenville Bible Methodist Church will officiate and burial will take place privately at Forest Home Cemetery, Greenville.

Instead of flowers, relatives and friends are asked to consider the needs of the family. Envelopes for contributions will be available at the funeral home.
