Richard J. Anderson was called home to be with his Lord on October 9, 2010. Born December 3, 1928, he grew up and went to high school in Cadillac, Michigan. His beloved parents were Walfred and Lillian Anderson.
A Grand Rapids resident, he retired north to Lake Ann, but returned to Grand Rapids in 2000.
He is survived by Carol, his cherished wife of 40 years. His first wife, Joy, predeceased him. He is also survived by son, Gary and wife, Valerie; daughter, Gail and husband, Kurt; daughter, Linda and husband, Mark; and son, Eric and wife, Kim; and grandchildren, Lauren and Elizabeth Anderson, Abby, Maggie (husband, Mark) and Calvin Dillinger, Ben (wife, Emily), Jonathon and Sam VerWys, and Jeff, Tim, Joshua, Karie and Seth Anderson; and great granddaughter, Audrey VerWys. He loved each and every one.
After serving in Japan in the US Army during WWII, Richard attended Michigan State University, graduating in Criminal Justice. He worked in Jackson State Prison: for US Military Intelligence: as a federal probation officer and as Chief Federal Probation Officer for western and northern Michigan.
In retirement, he and Carol served the Traverse City area as volunteers. In 1984, he was the Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 9th Congressional District. He was a proud patriot who loved to serve his country. He was a steady and loving example of a Christian man, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, professional, neighbor, and friend. We are grateful for his love and his life. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Grand Rapids on October 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Serving in Mission (sim.org).
