Michael J. King, age 67, of Fenwick, formerly of Belding, passed away Monday morning, September 16, 2013 at his home under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of Eddie Vern & Sylvia Gertie (Davis) King, he was born on August 3, 1946 in Jackson. Following high school, Mike served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. On March 22, 1969, in Greenville, he married the former Joan Eva Johnson and together they enjoyed 25 years of marriage until Joan passed away on May 13, 1993.

Mike enlisted in the Michigan National Guard in 1973, serving for almost 19 years and attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was called back to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm and he retired from the former Extruded Metals in Belding after 34 years of service.

On September 18, 2004 he married Christine (Hanna) Kennedy and they would have celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary this Wednesday. His greatest joy in life was time spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joan King; and a step-son, Charles William “Charlie” Kennedy on May 18, 2004.

Surviving are his wife, Chris Kennedy-King of Fenwick; a daughter, Shelley & Scott Gladding of Belding; a step-daughter, Dorothy & Ed Tripp of Grand Rapids; his parents-in-law, Charles & Janice Hanna of Gowen; nine grandchildren; and many other dear family and friends.

To the best step dad I could ever imagine having. I know we had our ups and downs but I think we had more ups than downs. I am so glad to have gotten the chance to know you and have you in my life. I am extremely glad that my daughters got to know you as their Papa and that you were there for both of them as much as you could be. I just think that they have the greatest guardian angel watching over them now. God truly has taken a wonderful man away from this earth and you are though about and missed every single day. Alyssia loves and misses you a lot and she continues to talk to you every night before she sleeps just to know that your still watching over her. Adara still sees your pictures and knows you. I never really got to tell you how much you being there for me helped me out greatly and how much I really did appreciate you and everything that you did no matter how big or small it was. Thank You from the bottom of my heart where you will always have a permanent place.Love you ALWAYS… your daughter.

    Shelley and family,

I remember all the times that my brother Eric and I spent at your mom and dad’s house. Your dad was such a neat guy to talk with and loved you with all he had. I am praying for you and your family as you mourn his loss.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the family of Sergeant King and thank him and his family for his service. Having worked with Chris for the last year I have grown to have a great respect for this man and the way he bravely battled his health issues. He soldiered on and kept up the fight so that he could have more time with those he loved. It was a testament to his fortitude and his love of family.
My prayers are with his family and loved ones in this time of incredible sorrow. May God bless you and keep you. And on behalf of other Veterans of the Army, the Michigan Army National Guard, and our great country I would like to thank SGT King and his family for his service and dedication.
