Martha Ann Smith, age 75, of Sidney passed away August 30, 2019 at her home under the loving care of her family and Heartland Hospice. The daughter of James Shelton and Zella Marie (Osborne) Carpenter, she was born on September 28, 1943 in Garretts Bend, West Virginia. On November 24, 1961, she married Jerry Bernard Smith and together they raised two children and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.
Martha worked outside the home, retiring from Electrolux Home Products plant in Greenville after 21 years of service. She was a member of UAW Local 137, where she also served as a union steward. Martha enjoyed most in her life, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; a sister, Betty Dimple Russell; a brother, Joseph Herman “John” Carpenter, two infant sisters, Alice and Savina Carpenter as well as several special nephews, Johnny, Billy and Chuck.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry Bernard Smith Sr. of Sidney; their children, Lois Ann Scofield of Sidney and Jerry Jr. & Michelle Smith of Trufant; four grandchildren, Jerry Steven & Tracy Smith and Angela Kay Smith, all of Sparta, Jeffrey Scott Brewington Jr., and Richard Lee Scofield Jr., both of Morley; six great-grandchildren: Destiny Brewington, Ashley Smith (Pohl), Emilee Smith, Dylan Smith, Mason Wabanimkee and Lily Grace Brewington; four brothers Robert Lee & Margie Carpenter of North Carolina, Silvon Shelton & Deloris Carpenter of Hurricane, West Virginia, William Henry Carpenter of Barton City, Michigan, Timothy Scott & Kelly Carpenter of Gaines, Michigan; two sisters Becky Jane & Don Ruppel of Saginaw, and Mary Etta Edwards and her husband; a special brother-in- law, Anthony Dale Edwards “Tony” of West Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews also very special to Martha.
Family committal services will be held at her and Jerry’s home in Sidney at 2:00 p.m. on her birthday, Saturday, September 28, 2019. All family and friends are welcome. Her ashes will rest in burial at Armstrong Cemetery on top of a mountain, with her parents, overlooking her home place in Garretts Bend, West Virginia.
