Mary Elaine Stearns, 86, of Wyoming, passed on to be with Jesus on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 from Spectrum Health-Blodgett Hospital after a brief illness. The daughter of Robert Harold & Leah (Morris) Barrons, she was born on June 8, 1924 in Cadillac and was raised during the depression years on the family farm near Tustin.

After earning her diploma in 1944 from Burdell Township Agricultural School in Tustin, she attended the Baptist Bible Institute for two years. On Nov. 7, 1959, in Big Rapids, she married Merle Stearns and they made their home in Wyoming. For twelve years she worked at Wolverine Shoe Company, later retiring from Butterworth Hospital where she worked in housekeeping from another dozen years. For the last two years she resided at The Lodge at Maple Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Margaret Hammar and Barbara Hammar; and a brother, Morris Barrons.

Surviving are a sister, Joan Bradford of San Jose, California; a special niece, Marcia Hammar, who was given the blessing of caring for her for the past eight years; many friends, in-laws, nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her unconditional love and kindness. Elaine touched the lives of many children as well. She loved to teach Sunday School and even had Bible school in her home for neighborhood children for years. She was passionate about sharing the Good News with everyone. “Earth has lost a jewel but Heaven has gained a Saint”

Memorial services are at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Grand Rapids First, 2100 44th St. SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49519, where Elaine was a member. She would have appreciated contributions in her memory to be directed to her church. Burial will be in Kent Memorial Gardens at a later date.
