Mrs. Lorna Lorraine Torgeson, age 78, passed away Tuesday morning, March 17, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, at her daughter’s home in Spring Lake.

She was born Aug. 3, 1930 to Simon and Ida (Simonelli) Lorenson in Laketon Twp., and lived all of her life in the Whitehall, Muskegon and Tri Cities Area. She graduated from Whitehall High School and attended Muskegon School of Business. In Whitehall, while her children were growing up she was very active in school PTA, the Swedish Lutheran and Congregational Churches, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, past president, secretary, & treasurer of Mayflower Guild, past president of Whitehall Hosp. Aux.

She went to work for the Muskegon Chronicle in 1965 and retired from there in 1999 having served the last 27 years as a Credit Manager. While there she made many friends she called her “other family.” She was a past president and secretary/ treasurer of the Muskegon Association of Credit Executives, past secretary treasurer of the Whitehall Yacht Club and previously served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Easter Seals and she was a charter member of Hackley Hospital Pediatrics Play Ladies and a very active member of the Muskegon Old Newsies counting money on collection day or selling papers on the street.

She was a current volunteer for American Red Cross Transportation where she was honored with the Community Services Award in 2005 and a member of RSVP of Muskegon. She was an avid golfer and member of the White Lake Golf Club, enjoyed shopping with her daughters, traveling abroad and in the U.S., wintering in Gulf Shores, Alabama, being a “Red Hatter” and playing cards every Monday with her brother and family.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by her three loving, caring children, Catherine (Jack) Cawthon, of Spring Lake, Nancy (Rich) Rouwhorst and Mark (Lynn) Bayne of Grand Haven, her very beloved grandchildren, Nathan (Emma) Rouwhorst, Jonathan Rouwhorst, Amanda Wilquet and Julie (Jack) Carr, great grandchildren Ariannah, Matthew and Jamie, dearest brother Morrey Lorenson, several nieces and nephews, very special niece Vicki (Bob) Quintilliano, much loved special friend and companion Mike Seymour of 20 years and his caring family, dear friend Renee Whitney, stepchildren Sandy (Bill) Ellis, Craig Stowe, Bruce Torgeson, Hedi VanVareni and eight step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Theodore in 1987, her parents and her brother, Ronald.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday the 20th at 2:00 pm at the White Lake Congregational Church in Whitehall. A special thank you to the caring people of Hospice and her special caregiver Pat. Memorials may be directed to Hospice or American Red Cross Transportation
