Leonard Paul “Lenny” Zimmerman, age 81, of Greenville, passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 16, 2009 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids. The son of Anthony Edward & Pauline Monica (Dukowska) Zimmerman, he was born on June 2, 1928 in Hamtramck.

Following his graduation from Belding High School in 1947, he briefly attended Michigan State University before enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church where he served as an usher and minister of hospitality, as well as a member of the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101 in Greenville. On Oct. 6, 1995, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Parnell, he married Barbara D. Turner. Lenny had worked in the service department at the former Ranney Refrigerator Co., as safety director at Ore-Ida, and retired from Granco-Clark in Belding. In retirement he worked part-time as bartender at the Greenville Country Club and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and was an avid University of Michigan football fan missing only two home games since 1996.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Barb Zimmerman of Greenville; two sisters, Mary White of Walled Lake, and Anna & Vern Nielsen of Belding; a brother, Daniel Zimmerman of Belding; siblings-in-law, Virginia Weber, Jack & Judy Turner, all of Greenville, and Faye & Frank Nelson of Bostwick Lake; many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his precious cats, Scooter, Koala, and Maizey.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Greenville, with Father Phil Salmonowicz presiding. Visitation is Tuesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with the Rosary prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Instead of flowers, Lenny would have appreciated contributions in his memory to St. Charles Catholic Church. To send a message of sympathy to the family, sign Lennys online guest book, or to share a favorite memory, please click the “Sign Guest Book” link above.

Many, many years ago Lenny was a member of St.Charles. I was a teenager in trouble. Will never forget his kindness he gave me one evening during Saturday night Mass. Walking out for I was very ill. He followed me and comforted me. The kindness of those few minutes of care changed my life. He made me feel no longer ashamed. God Bless Lenny, never knew his name. When I seen his face I cried for there was the man that was my angel on earth.

My heart sank when I heard the news that Lenny had passed, because I wanted so much to say thank you to him for sharing his fishing trip story in the Daily News. The adventure he shared with my Dad was a treasure. Please accept my most sincere condolences today. I can’t help but wonder if Charlie and Gord had a pole ready for Lenny’s arrival in Heaven!
