Mr. Junior LeRoy Avery, age 81, of Spencer Township, passed away Thursday morning, July 8, 2010 at his home under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of George E. & Anna G. (Wolbers) Avery, he was born on March 25, 1929 in Spencer Township.

A veteran of World War II, Junior proudly served with the U.S. Navy and was employed at R.J. Tower Automotive for 25 years. On August 15, 1981, in Kent City, he married the former Myrna McAllister-Salyer. He enjoyed camping, gardening, and hunting, but spending time with his family was his greatest delight. Junior always made family and friends the center of his attention and had a friendly smile for everyone he met.

For nearly 25 years he was a member of the Family Life Center Church of God in Belding, where he was an ordained minister serving God and the church in various capacities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George & Anna Avery; a son, Lenny Avery Sr.; a grandson, Derick Hershberger; a great-grandson, Damien Joles; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Harry & Betty Avery, Jess Avery, and John Avery; and a sister and a brother-in-law, Dorothy & Jim Siegel.

Surviving are his wife of almost 29 years, Myrna Avery; his children, Liz Avery and Darleen Pease of Maine, Melody and Amy Avery of Sidney, Kathy Farrell of Lake Stanton, Robin & Terry Kelsey of Cedar Springs, Debbie & Tim Thatcher of Belding, Carla & Bill Sharky of Canadian Lakes, Rose & Bob Romine of Lakeview, Rocky & Linda Salyer of Cedar Springs, Dawn & Nate Cooper of Cedar Springs; two sisters-in-law, Jo Avery of Cedar Springs, and Eleanor Avery-Barager of Rockford; his pastor, Rev. William and Sister Sharyn Overton and their family; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a host of adopted grandchildren and great grandchildren and special friends.

Visitation is Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Pastor Bill Overton will officiate and burial, with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy, will follow at Greene Cemetery near Orleans. Instead of flowers, Junior would have appreciated memorial contributions to the Family Life Center Church of God. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Aunt Myrna, Thank you for taking such good care of Uncle Junior. We didn’t get to see him as often as we would have liked. He was very special to us and we loved him very much. I will miss his kind hugs and great smiles. Everyone who met him loved him instantly. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He loved everyone. I will miss our run ins at Wal-Mart. He is now with Daddy and Daddy is showing him around heaven. We love you.

My thoughts, and prayers go out,to the family,of Junior.I got to share, many years with Junior,in my life.I remember him, going and getting a station wagon, from the Auction,so i would have wheels. It was a older one,but he said it will be ok for you.It was the thought of it,without him,at that time,no transportation, and i had 3 small children at the time.He was always trying to help others,in time of need.I am proud,to have shared, his love, and being in his family at that time. My thoughts, and prayers,go out to the family.May you rest in peace now,as you are in a better place. We all love you.Joanne(sissy).And my coffee pot,is still always on: LOL

    Your daughter Liz

I will miss you and your funny messages you left on our answering machine about ole Pa Avery, and you can’t find your girls. Some of my fondest memories, are riding around when I was little, hanging on to your neck, telling you to go faster, and yelling WEEEE to the top of my lungs, taking day trips, stopping to get a loaf of bread and some meat, and continuing on our way. It is still my favorite!
I’D PICK YOU Dad, If all the fathers Had lined up one by one, And God told me to pick, I’d still choose to be your daughter. I’m proud to have a father Who listens and understands, Who taught me and set fair rules Without unfair demands. Dad, you are my hero, My role model in all you do. So Dad, if I could pick again, You know I’d still pick you.
You are the best Dad a girl could have ever asked for, and I will miss your sweet voice and smile. You will be forever in my memories, and when I think of you, it will always be with a big ole smile!!! I love you very, very, very much!!!

Uncle Junior held a special part of my heart. He was more like a Dad to me. He always loved me for who I was, not for who he wanted me to be. He was always kind and loving. Always a smile and kind word to say. He loved Jesus so much and his life showed it. His family and friends were special to him. Every tine I went to visit him, he would always ask me if I wanted something to eat or drink. I would say no thanks and he would say, I am only going to asks you once then you have to go get your own. Now I know where I get it from, when people come I always try to feed them. And I always say ok, but when you get hungry now you’ll have to go get it. It must be a family thing to feed people. He is not suffering now and he is visiting with Grandma and Grandpa, my Daddy and brother, niece. I know Daddy is so happy to see him, they would visit on Sunday’s after church when Uncle Junior would come over for lunch.Even though I have cried so many tears already missing you, I know you are resting in peace now. I love you forever and you will never be forgotten.

Junior, I want you to know how much you meant to Terry & I. When we cut the hay over at your house no matter how you felt you would still want to go out and rake it for us. That meant a lot to the both of us.
I know that you are in a better place and that you are in no more pain. You will be forever in our hearts and we loved you very much. Love Terry & Robin & Families

Grandpa, I want you to know I love you SO much!! You took a piece of my heart with you when you left us this morning! I find in comfort in knowing that you are up there with the angels and are seeing that Heaven you have always taught me about! Say Hi to my Daddy and I will see you again when my time on earth is done!
