Joseph Boyd Sutherlin, age 62, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 3, 2018  at Trillium Woods and went home to be in the loving arms of Jesus.

The son of Vard & Helen Sutherlin, he was born on July 29, 1955 in Grand Rapids. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Nancy Bockheim, sister Barb Dubie and brothers Dan & Doug Sutherlin.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, soul mate & best friend, Bernadette “Bern” Sutherlin, their four children Joey & Kim Sutherlin, Denise & Derek Wysocki, Taran & Nick Verboam, Alex & Jessica Sutherlin. 

Joseph will also be missed by his grandchildren Angeline, Whitney, Ryan, Samantha, Chase, Layla; great-grandchildren Miles Jr. and Avalyn; siblings Mary, Ruth, Peggy, Nancy, Jim, Janet, Robert, Pete; many nieces and nephews, as well as special friends Mary, Tony & Marty, Tom & Sarah, Janet & Tom, Pastor Jon, Pastor Lonnie and all of his Sunday School Children. 

Joseph was an amazing man that was very devoted to his faith and enjoyed dedicating his time to caring for and helping the New Life Community.  Joseph loved to teach Sunday School and study the scriptures in his bible.  When he wasn’t helping people in the church or the community, Joseph was cheering for U of M in any event and building things as a hobby.  He will be deeply missed. Joseph’s family would like to give a special thanks to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods Nurses and Aides for keeping Joseph comfortable until the end.

 A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at New Life, 2777 Knapp St NE, Grand Rapids, MI.

    My condolences Denise on the loss of your beloved father. Losing a dad is such a painful thing and you still have his memories to give you strength every day. He is watching over you.
