John Henry Sweers, 84, of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his Lord and Savior while surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

John was born February 16, 1935, to Henry and Henrietta (Hoogerhyde) Sweers. John was the only son of six children. John graduated from Union High School, then served in the United States Army stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He later attended Davenport College. On May 22, 1959, John married Helen Keathley Blackburn, and together they had three children. John was employed by Polly Anna Bakery and Arnie’s. John’s passions were his family, God’s Word, playing cards, reading, classic cars, fishing, and traveling anywhere with Helen. John had a keen mind, a witty sense of humor, and a fierce independence; all traits that live on in his family members.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Helen, who he missed beyond measure. Just before he passed, he smiled at the thought of all the many loved ones he would soon see again. Left to cherish his memory are his children; Debbie & Bob Zieger, Michael & Jan Sweers, and Dianna & Todd Alderman; grandchildren, Jennifer & Mitch Fuller, Emily & Brandon Brougham, Angela & Jay Gibbs, Audrey & Ryan Wolfe, Shelby & Jason Cremer, Kailey & Skylar Watson, Connor Alderman, Mia Alderman, Andrew & Erin Zieger, Katie Zieger, and Jack & Kamila Zieger; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Brice, and Landon Brougham, Jenna, Isaac, and Clara Cremer, Caiden and Emilia Gibbs, Brewer Watson, and Lily Seif; two sisters, Alene Weidman, and Joyce & Don Cresswell; sister-in-law, Linda & Tony Davis. John was blessed with relationships with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a cherished church family.

A memorial celebration of John’s life is being planned for later this summer and details will be published at that time.
