John Arthur Hoke, age 77, of Greenville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at his home. The son of Earl & Beatrice (Mast) Hoke, he was born on October 21, 1939 in Goshen, Indiana, and was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in Korea, Germany, and a number of stateside bases. John was also a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war, having earned the Bronze Star medal, and retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class after 21 years of honorable service.
On December 31, 1961, in Mishawaka, Indiana, he married Lynda Diane Myers and together they raised two sons and enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage. After coming to Greenville, John worked at Federal-Mogul, then Electrolux, and lastly as a school bus driver for the Head Start program. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, was a life long Dodgers fan, and enjoyed watching football. In Greenville, John was a member of the Cleveland-Wolverton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3794 and attended Seeds Family Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Lynda Hoke; their two sons, John A. & Sharolyn Hoke II, and Kenneth R. Hoke, all of Greenville; a brother, Wilbur & Mary Hoke of Wisconsin; a sister, Helen & Gary Fenner; his grandchildren, April & Brandon Schulte, Nate Hoke, Rebecca Hoke, Kristopher & Courtney Hoke, Thomas John & Bry Hoke, and Justin Hoke; his great-grandchildren, Brayden James Schulte, Austin Bryceson Schulte, Connor Hoke, and Kenya Hoke; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Pastor Louis Mogdis officiating. Committal services, with full military honors, will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, Michigan.
