  • Visitation:  12-1 p.m.  Saturday
  • Services:  1:00 p.m.  Saturday

Mr. James V. Stryker, age 80, of Lincoln Pines Resort, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday morning, March 18, 2008 at Spectrum Health-Kent Community Campus, Grand Rapids. The son of Russell E. & Gertrude (Hawley) Stryker, he was born on Dec. 16, 1927 in Grand Rapids.

Jim attended Union High School, then served in the U.S. Coast Guard following the end of World War II. He retired from the Kent County Road Commission, where he worked as a driver. In retirement, he helped out at Ed Koehn Ford where he made many lasting friendships and truly appreciated being treated as part of the Koehn family.

A lifelong fan of classic Western movies (especially John Wayne films), he enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as boating, but found his greatest pleasure in spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Stryker; a sister-in-law, Millie Stryker; and a son-in-law, Ray Dines. Surviving are his children, Debra Dines of San Antonio, Texas, Teresa Wollen of Grand Rapids, Cindy & David Lehman of Greenville, and Denise Stryker of Grand Rapids; special friend, former wife, and mother of his children, Val Denton of Grand Rapids; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane & Les Snyder; a brother, Charles Russell Stryker, all of Florida; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; special cousins, Eugene & Barb Hawley of Marne; and many other dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where the family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to services. As he wished, cremation has already taken place and burial will be in Rosedale Memorial Park.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to West Michigan Therapy Dogs, in care of Stacie Carter, Kent Community Campus, 750 Fuller Avenue N.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home. Denise, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Although I am hundreds of miles away, I am only an email or phone call away if you need anything. Losing a parent is heartbreaking, but have faith that they are in a better place.

To all my family and all of our friends and co-workers
Thanks so much for all the well wishes and support in this trying time. I just want to pass on something that was given to me my Aunt Jane at the greatest loss of my life to help me through. May this give each of us some encourgement.
Someone is always there for you
Stressful situations and trying times are some of the realities of life.
When we experience them, we may think they’ll never leave.
But even the most difficult times come and go, and the strength we need to meet the situation will be there for us in the helping hand of a friend, in the compassion of a loved one who cares, and in the listening ear of someone who knows what we’re going through.
All we have to do is look up and reach out, and someone will be there to share our troubles.
This was written by Linda E Knight
Just remember, we are all here for each other to share memories. Hang on to those, as they will be our blessings!

Jim Stryker – My friend, my buddy always at work by 8:00 with a smile and the words good morning Robin everyday. He worked full-time at Ed Koehn Ford and wore many hats he was the maintenance man, janitor, mailman, banker, and number one driver for our shuttle service. Jim and I were very close we’d invite him to our family functions birthdays, holidays, or just to come over for dinner he especially enjoyed sitting by the fireplace with our dog Jewels. And tell us stories about working for the Kent County Road Commission. He would have us laughing so hard he would have us all in tears. He would always ask me are you ready to get rid you my dog yet? I would say no. He would also talk about his Mother’s good home cooking especially pies he loved them. The past couple of months he has had his ups and downs I would tell him – Jim you are my enegerizer bunny. I would try to go up to the hospital every day, and when he was moved to G. R. I tried to go down once or twice a week to visit, he enjoyed our visits, the nurse would say to him Jim you haven’t smiled like that in a long time. And she would ask Jim who is this I would introduce myself as his girlfriend and you should have seen him smile. Jim was a very kind, caring, loving, good-hearted person. And I will miss very much.
