James David Fugitt, age 78, of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018 with his family by his side.

Jim was a graduate of Godwin Heights High School, Class of 1958. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Antietam, CV-36, serving from 1958 to 1962. He later enjoyed careers with Steelcase, GRJC, and the EGR schools.

He was visionary, forecasting in the 1980’s that every home would have a computer within ten years. Jim now joins in heaven his parents, Raymond Lewis and Marian Justine (Campbell) Fugitt, brother Raymond Merritt (Mike) Fugitt, and daughter Catherine Ann Fugitt.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife Sara (Beals) Fugitt; children David, estranged son Marshall Studt, Melinda (Terry) Ganka, and Stephen (Vanessa) Beals-Fugitt; sister Janice Fugitt Darling; brother Kelly (Cherie) Fugitt; grandchildren Brittany, Renee, Brianna, Isis, Charlotte, Jay, Tyler, John, Zander, and Zeke; and great grandchildren Lora, Graceey, Becca, Jordan, and Nova; nieces and nephews Michael (Deborah), Christopher (Rachel), Nathan (Amber), Nicholas, Amy and Daniel.

The family also wishes to acknowledge the friendship of many, including Hilda Garvey, Bob and Shelley Parente, and Beth Billings; the caring staff at SarahCare (Knapps Corner), Ashley and Jinny with the Area Agency on Aging, and Nelly, Austin and Brooke at Samaritas; and the resident gentlemen Jim shared meals with.

A Celebration of Life open house with a light lunch will be held Thursday, June 28, from 11-2pm at Calvary Church of Wayland, 304 S Main St, Wayland, MI.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, please remember Jim by being kind and selfless to others, like he was to you; laugh, love children, and tell fart jokes with rolling belly laughs.

His greatest passion was his love for his wife, Sara, with whom he shared more than half his life. Jim was an exceptionally selfless gentleman who brought out the best in those he loved. He was caring and courageous; devoted to loving and cherishing his family.
