In retirement, she and Norb returned to Michigan and built their lakeside home at Clifford Lake where Jackie loved entertaining her family. She also enjoyed traveling and reading. She and Norb would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary today (Sept. 6th).

She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her husband of nearly 56 years, Norb Vander Steen of Clifford Lake; their children, Kim Vander Steen & Tony Cinquegrani of Palatine, Ill., Kris & Mark Lula of Rochester Hills, Kurt & Jane Vander Steen of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Kent & Cindy Vander Steen of DeWitt; and eight grandchildren, Claire Cinquegrani, Steven Lula, Michelle Lula, Jenny Lula, Sarah Jane Vander Steen, Krista Vander Steen, John Vander Steen, and Kelli Vander Steen. Also surviving are a half-sister, Joan Egan of Tucson, Arizona; a half-brother, Ray Town of Jackson; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 from St. Charles Catholic Church, 505 S. Lafayette Street, Greenville, with Father Phil Salmonowicz officiating.  Burial will follow privately at Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge.

I taught across the hall from Jackie and we got our masters together. We wrote our practicum-Jackie was the typist, as she was the fastest and Clairan and I gave the verbage. It made a hard job fun working with her. I really missed her when she retired.

Dear Norb and Family, There just aren’t words adequate to express the loss when one of our unique college group leaves. We’ve been like a family for over 50 years, and it’s like losing a member of that family with whom we’ve shared many good times and bad, but can thank the Lord for very many wonderful times together over those years.
I’m sure our entire “family” group feels your loss at this time, but thank God for having had the opportunity to share those good times together.
We send our love and condolences to your entire family.

It has taken me a few days to write this but my memories of Jackie will be us talking every Friday night at the Hotel about our week of seeing the lights go on and off at our houses. You see Jackie, Norb and Larry and I live across the lake from one another and Jackie and I were early risers so we would watch for the lights to go on in each others house to see who got up first. Of course it was never Norb or Larry! We would know if we had early appointments by the lights going off and on and when the Kids and Grandkids came by what lights were on and how many. Jackie never liked it when we went to Florida because there were no lights unless one of the kids came up. She always told me when we got back if she had seen lights on. We also enjoyed sharing books and talking about them. She was a great friend and we miss her dearly.
