Mrs. Irene Ruth Varney, age 86, of Greenville, passed away Wednesday evening, March 8, 2006 in the Long Term Care Unit of Spectrum Health United Memorial-United Campus, Greenville. The daughter of Bert & Lovina (Ecker) Bauman, she was born on Oct. 20, 1919 in Greenville. She married Freeman Varney on March 9, 1938, in Petoskey. In 1952 they moved from Greenville to Harrison, where they made their home until Freeman passed away in November of 1983.

Irene retired from Evart Products and even in retirement keep herself busy by working part-time at the Burger King in northtown Greenville for 14 years. A devoted wife, mother, and grandma, nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her family. She enjoyed traveling, driving, and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three infant sons, Donald, Carl, and Freeman Jr.; and two brothers, Stan and Earl Bauman.

Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald & Sonja Varney of Harrison, Dale & Louise Varney of Greenville, Keith & Jackie Varney of Lakeview, and Larry & Shirley Varney of St. Johns; two sisters, Dorothy Forton of Greenville, and Janet & Don Walston of Crystal Mountain; three brothers, Dan & Bev Bauman of Ohio, Robert & Arlene Bauman of Clare, and Tom & Arlene Bauman of Greenville; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and her special friend and roommate, Adele Almy.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 13, 2006 at the Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with Elder Varian Bauman officiating. Cremation has taken place and burial will be in the spring in Harrison. Visitation with the family is Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
