Frederick S. Cosgrove, age 84, of Clarksville, passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at his home. The son of Robert & Bessie (Yiley) Cosgrove, he was born on November 22, 1925 in Stonington, Connecticut.

He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Following his discharge, he married the former Mary Elizabeth Mellow on June 1, 1946 in Westerly, Rhode Island, and in 1949 they came to Michigan to make their home. Following his retirement from General Motors after 41 years of service, he worked for another 16 years at Progressive Technologies. Fred enjoyed life. He was especially devoted to his family and will be greatly missed. And had a gift for writing poetry and an extraordinary sense of humor. Two of his poems:

“At last I reached the lofty perch that Id set out to gain”

“How straight the blade And of a temper true Alas! Its strength is gone The parts are two”

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Dorothy Algiere; and a son, Michael Cosgrove. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary Cosgrove; their children, Robert Cosgrove, Judith (Joseph) Raymond, and Joseph (Liz) Cosgrove; a daughter-in-law, Vivian Cosgrove; his grandchildren, Amanda (Jeremy) Otto, Jennifer (Gordon) Wiest, Michaela Moses, and Angie (Tony) Moses; great-grandchildren, Alexis Otto, Breanna Otto, and Joseph Wiest; and a sister, Laura Cosgrove.

The family invites relatives and friends to join them in celebrating Fred’s life on Saturday, Oct. 23rd from 1-5 p.m. at the American Legion Post 208 at 133 – 44th Street, Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions Spectrum Health Hospice (100 Michigan N.E., MC 04, Grand Rapids MI 49503) or the American Legion would be appreciated.
