Ella Mae Byrd, age 78, of Greenville, formerly of Plymouth, was promoted to Glory early Monday morning, Dec. 19, 2005 from her home with her family at her side. The daughter of Leroy & Lila (Probasco) Chamness, she was born on June 14, 1927 in Toledo, Ohio. On Jan. 17, 1948, in Detroit, she married Gerald D. Byrd.

A loving wife, mother, grandma, and friend, she enjoyed spending time with her family, good food, reading mystery novels, and watching Everybody Loves Raymond. She had worked as a retail clerk at Montgomery-Ward and Cunninghams Pharmacy. In Greenville, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Gerald D. Byrd of Greenville; their five children, Gloria Byrd of Plymouth, Gerald & Laura Byrd of Sterling Heights, Judith & James Adams of Greenville, Lila & Michael Crupper of Garden City, and Shirley & William Steele of Plymouth; and four grandchildren, Michael Cutshaw, Jerry Byrd, Shannon Crupper, and Jeffrey Byrd.

Memorial services will be held next Wednesday, Dec 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. from the Salvation Army Citadel, 26700 W. Warren, Dearborn Heights, Michigan, 48127, with a luncheon to follow. Honoring her wishes, cremation has already taken place. Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Salvation Army.
