Biography

Heaven is a lot more Irish this week. On Monday, October 15th 2012, Edward Gerard Malone, 89, our beloved father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather, entered his new life with our Lord Jesus Christ, forever enjoying the “peace that transcends all understanding”. It is impossible to convey what our father meant to those who loved him. But when you look into the eyes of his beloved wife, or hear the laughter of his many children and grandchildren, or see the tears of all those who will miss him dearly, in those moments you understand how this truly honorable and courageous man left a legacy of love that will last for many generations.

Edward was born on May 4th, 1923 in Grand Rapids, MI. In World War II Edward piloted a B-17 for the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying many harrowing combat missions for his country. After the war, Edward met his wife, Shirley, and began a journey of love that would span 63 years and produce more than a full basketball team of six boys, all of whom are profoundly thankful to have had the father they did. Edward was preceded in death by sons David and Brian, and sisters Rosemary and Cheryl.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Shirley, sons Mark (Laurie), Mike (Susan), Doug (Becky), Bruce (Sheri), fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held Friday, October 19th at 11:00am at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2750 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids, MI, 49546. The family will receive visitors at 10:00am at St. Paul’s, with luncheon to follow.

Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place.
