Donald A. Schum, age 85, of Gowen, passed away Tuesday evening, August 2, 2005 at Metron of Greenville. The son of Augustus & Alice (Bristol) Schum, he was born on July 1, 1920 in Batavia, New York. A veteran of World War II, Don served with the U.S. Army in Korea and was a member of the Lester J. Sitts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5065 in Sheridan. After returning home, he married the former Wanda A. Pawluczyk on Feb. 10, 1948 in Batavia, New York. Don retired from Trojan Heavy Equipment in 1982 and he and Wanda moved to Michigan to be closer to family. He had enjoyed league bowling and golf.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Wanda Schum; a daughter and son-in-law, MaryAnn & Ferris Johnson; all of Gowen; his grandchildren, Theresa Dickinson of Greenville, Lisa & Jon Smidt of Colorado, Ferris Jr. & Jennifer Johnson of Sparta, Tammy & Rick Roy of Greenville, Denise & Norb Hoppe of Rockford; his brothers, Courtney & Jean Schum of Ohio, Eugene Schum of Maine, and William & Meryl Schum of North Carolina. Also surviving are eleven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, 2005 at the Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with the Rev. Aaron I. Sorrels III, pastor of Settlement Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial, with military honors rendered by the Lester J. Sitts VFW Post 5065, will follow at Little Denmark Cemetery, Gowen. Visitation is this evening (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. Envelopes for memorial contributions to the American Heart Association are available at the funeral home.
