Donald Leslie Sloothaak, 76, of Otsego, Michigan, passed away at his home on Friday, December 2, 2011, after many years of suffering from a liver disease.

Don was born in Banks Township, Antrim County, Michigan on July 12, 1935, the youngest of 4 children to Gerrit and Lizzie (Ritsema) Sloothaak. In 1951, at the age of 16, Don left home and went to live with his brother Corwin in Holland, MI. At the age of 18, Don was set up on a blind date, arranged by Corwin’s wife Minnie. On this blind date, he met his future wife, Muriel Ruth Van Houten.

Don entered the Army on November 16, 1954, and was honorably discharged on June 14, 1956. Two weeks later on June 23, 1956, he married Muriel at her parents’ home in Grand Haven, Michigan. Don and Muriel settled in Holland. In 1972, they purchased White City Farm, in Otsego, and have lived there for the last 40 years.

Don & Muriel had two children: Michael Sloothaak, of West Lafayette, Indiana and Susan (Sloothaak) DeKoekkoek of Otsego, Michigan. Their grandchildren are Jon & Megan (DeKoekkoek) Hietbrink, Donna DeKoekkoek, and Peter DeKoekkoek. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, his brother’s wives, Mildred Sloothaak & Minnie Sloothaak, his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Willard Sloothaak, Marion (Ray) Brouwer, & Corwin Sloothaak, along with one grandchild Benjamin DeKoekkoek.

A Memorial Service will be held on December 6, 2011 at Calvary Community Church, Plainwell, Michigan, with the Rev. Dr. Warren Lammers of Second Christian Reformed Church, Kalamazoo, officiating.
