David Edward Werthman, age 69, of Kentwood, passed away on April 22, 2018 at home surrounded by family. The son of John Edward & Georgia Anne (Proper) Werthman, he was born on April 23, 1948 in Grosse Pointe Farms and grew up in Clawson.

A decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, David proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, was wounded in combat on three separate occasions, and attained the rank of Sergeant. He earned the Purple Heart medal with three Oak Leaf clusters, and was awarded the Vietnam Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, as well as the Good Conduct medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Michael Vogel. Surviving are two sisters, Joanne & William Harrington, and Suzanne Vogel; a brother, Paul Werthman; a niece, Lauren Harrington; two nephews, Christopher Harrington, and Michael & Michele Bachert; and four great-nieces.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018 at St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, 1401 Whittier Road, Grosse Pointe Park, where family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

    I am compeletly devastated at his passing. He was my best freind growing up in Clawson Mi. If Joann sees this please give a call at 586-219-0380. I’m so sorry I can’t be at tbe service. He was a true hero.

    Dear Johnnie and family. It has been a few years since hearing the news about my dear friend. When he told me he had cancer I thought he was joking. I JUST THOUGHT, IT CAN’T BE. I was devastated and could not reach out. I would love to reconnect. You were almost like a sister
