Betty Jean Town, age 88, passed away Saturday evening, December 13, 2014 in the emergency room at Spectrum Health-United Hospital in Greenville, just six days shy of her 89th birthday.

The daughter of Albert & Goldie (Wable) Maxfield, she was born on December 19, 1925 in Greenville and was a graduate of Greenville High School.

On March 16, 1947, in Greenville, she married Harold Albert Town and together they raised two sons, farmed the land that has been in the Town family for over 150 years, and enjoyed almost 58 years of marriage until Harold passed away on March 12, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Vivan Nelson.

Betty Jean also worked outside the home as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 17 years, and then in the personnel office at the former Ore-Ida Foods plant.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Betty Jean found her greatest joy in her family and her church. She was a member of the Greenville Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.

Surviving are her sons, Jon Michael & Katie Town, and Michael Jon & Claire Town, all of Greenville; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Billiejo & Todd Snider, Jeremy M.A. & Julie Town, Heather & Scott Hoy, Jeana & Doug Hansen, Christopher & Jennifer Town, Brooke & Ken Bailey, Duane & Carrie Sherman, and Whitney & Austin Kennedy; eighteen great grandchildren, Kristan, Justin, Megan, Kylie, Brayden, Paetyn, Cory, Austin, Justin, Nathan, Grant, Alysa, Madison, Bree, Dane, Ella, Sawyer, and Lincoln; two great-great grandchildren, Kylie and Camden; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many dear friends.

Visitation is from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 10700 West Carson City Road, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. A luncheon will follow the funeral service and burial will take place privately at Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding.

While Betty Jean enjoyed flowers, she would have appreciated a more lasting tribute in the form of memorial contributions to her church. Envelopes will be available at the church.
