Arthur William Schuitema, age 84, formerly of Edmore, passed away Tuesday morning, May 14, 2019 under the loving care of his son, daughter-in-law, and Spectrum Health Hospice at his son's home near Howard City.  The son of Martin Marinus & Ellen Mae (Corkins) Schuitema, he was born on July 7, 1934 in Grand Rapids and grew up in the Wyoming-Grand Rapids area.

A veteran of the Korean War era, Art proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in occupied Germany.  On October 5, 1956 he married Carol LaVon Norder and together they raised two children and enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Carol passed away on March 6, 2018.

Art's lifework as an engineer in the aerospace industry began in Grand Rapids and included positions with Lear Siegler, Martin Marietta, and finally Lockheed Martin in Florida.  In retirement, Art & Carol returned to Michigan where Art remained active as a member of the Lions Club, and by serving on the Edmore Village Council, including terms as Village President and Village Manager.  In his spare time, Art also helped the late Dale McCullough care for families at the former Stebbins-McCullough Funeral Chapel in Edmore.

Surviving are his children, Cheryl & Don Johnson of Kissimmee, Florida, and Gregg & Donna Schuitema of Howard City;  a brother, Jim Schuitema of Jenison;  four grandchildren;  six great-grandchildren;  and several nieces and nephews.

Committal services, with military honors, are at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta.  Instead of flowers, Art would have appreciated contributions in his memory to either the American Cancer Society, the Old Fence Rider Museum of Edmore, The Lions Club, or Spectrum Health Hospice.
