Staff Sgt. Albert S. Fugitt, Jr., age 73, of Greenville, passed away Thursday evening, October 25, 2018 at Spectrum Health-United Hospital in Greenville.  The son of Jean Marie (Falco) & Albert Sheldon Fugitt, Sr., he was born on January 17, 1945 in Suffern, New York.

A decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Al proudly served in the United States Army retiring after a 20 year career as a Staff Sergeant.  A recipient of the Purple Heart, he also was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and Army of Occupation Medal for his service in post war Germany, and in Vietnam earned the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal with Four Bronze Battle Stars, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, as well as the Army Achievement Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and multiple Good Conduct Medals.

On December 15, 1990, at the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, he married  Opal May (Rohn) Medlar and together they enjoyed almost 28 years of marriage until Opal passed away on September 8, 2018 from injuries received in an automobile accident.  He was also preceded in death by his parents;  a daughter, Kellie Fugitt;  and a son, Eric Medlar.

Surviving are his children,  Kimberly Sims of Muskegon, Sean & Sharon Fugitt of Greenville, John & Samantha Fugitt of Muskegon, Greg Fugitt of Ionia, Jeff & Kristine Fugitt of Spring Lake, Michael Dutsch of Germany, Rob & Sabrina Medlar of Gowen, and Kirk & Lori Medlar of Greenville; a sister, Carol Pruitt of Englewood, Florida;  twenty-six grandchildren;  ten great grandchildren;  and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family is from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, October 29, 2018 at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.  Honoring Al's wishes, cremation has taken place.
