Darrell Alan Nisonger, age 71, of Greenville, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021 in the emergency room at Spectrum Health-United Hospital after a sudden heart attack. The son of Harold F. & Pauline Bernice (Betser) Nisonger, he was born on November 4, 1949 in Greenville.
After graduating high school, Darrell enlisted in the United States Army and was a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, having been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Expert Marksmanship Badge, and the Bronze Star Medal (which is awarded for either heroic or meritorious service and achievement in a combat zone). Within a few years of his honorable discharge from the Army, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served five years during the Cold War era.
After returning home to Greenville, he worked at Electrolux Home Products, Northland Corporation, and the Hi-Delite Restaurant in Greenville. Although he never owned one, Darrell loved motorcycles -- especially Harley-Davidson's, but found his greatest joy in time spent with his family. He delighted in his regular lunches with his brother, as well as seeing his nieces and nephews laugh and play.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are five brothers and sisters, Dennis & Vicki Miller, Terry & Rhonda Nisonger, and Sherry Barnhart, all of Greenville, Rusty Nisonger of Sand Lake, and Scott & Tracy Nisonger of Tennessee; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation is from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Christiansen's Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
