Betty Jean Sly, age 88, of Sheridan, passed away early Thursday morning, August 29, 2024 at her home under the loving care of her family and Care Team Hospice. The daughter of Paul S. & Mary Elizabeth (Hall) Comley, she was born on March 19, 1936 in Lexington, Kentucky.
On September 26, 1953, in Belding, she married Robert LaVern Sly and together they raised five children and enjoyed nearly 68 years of marriage until Bob passed away on July 14, 2021 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
A devoted wife and mother, Betty Jean also worked outside at home at the former LuVan Industries in Belding and at ASC in Lansing. She was a member of Open Door Fellowship Church in Carson City, and enjoyed quilting, embroidery and knitting.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert L. Sly, Sr.; a son, Leslie W. "Les" Sly; a granddaughter, Heidi Jean; two great-grandsons, Corey and C.J.; her sisters and brothers, Mary Ann Comley, Ruth Wilbur, Paula Nash, Lena Lewis, Ward Emmons, Floyd Emmons, Agnes Bailey, Helen Emmons, Maxine Higbee, and Clifford Ross; siblings-in-law, Arden Sly, Sandra Hansen, Althea Nichols, Clarabelle "Phyllis" Sawdy, Betty Sias, Chuck Sly, Burton Sly, and Raymond Sly, Jr.
Surviving are her children, Deborah & Fred Jeffery of Sheridan, Theresa & Keith Edwards of Gowen, Nancy Sly of Reed City, and Robert L. "Bob" & Barb Sly, Jr. of Sheridan; sixteen grandchildren; forty-seven great-grandchildren; twenty-nine great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Barry & Bonnie Emmons of Cedar Springs, and Leonard Emmons of Ionia; three sisters-in-law, Freda & Gary VanBuskirk, Sharon Collins, and Charlene Cazier; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 and from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Christiansen's Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. The Rev. Larry Austin, pastor of Open Door Fellowship, will officiate and burial will follow at Evergreen Township Cemetery near Sheridan.
